We were delighted to welcome Derek Lewis, the new Chairman of National Mencap, to Coventry last night.
Arriving fresh off the train, he joined members of the Coventry Mencap committee for dinner and a discussion – about Mencap locally and nationally; past, present and future.
He told us about some of his plans for National Mencap going forward, about bringing back the membership side of things and improving communication with local groups like ours.
We told him all about the fun we have, both at Saturday Link-up sessions and at Wayfarers, as well as all the trips that we go on. He laughed when we said we were often planning the next trip while we were still on the current one!
After dinner, it was time for Wayfarers. Last night we had ‘Tiger Feet’ dance in, so it was a very active night. It was lovely to see most of the club members and volunteers up and dancing for an hour (and such a shame that the paid staff who come with members sat on the side watching). Derek had a chat with some club members, and even joined in the dancing!
We really enjoyed having him come to visit, and hope that he has learned a lot about us as well. We’ve invited him back to visit Gateway Camp in September – so watch this space!
